GRACE

1-COMMENTARY

GRACE is mentioned in the Bible many times, yet Jesus never spoke the word "GRACE" as recorded in English. GRACE is a result of "faith in Jesus Christ."

2-STATISTICS

The word "GRACE" appears in the Old Testament approximately 38 times.

The word "GRACE" appears in the New Testament approximately 128 times.

3-DEFINITION

The word "GRACE" as it is used in the Old Testament can mean the following:

GRACE can mean: graciousness, kindness, favor, well-favored, highly favored.

GRACE can also mean: to beseech, to give, grant, to entreat, merciful, to have pity upon, and make supplication.

GRACE can also mean: to stoop in kindness to an inferior, to bestow, to implore, and to move to favor by petition.

GRACE can also mean: pleasant and precious.

The word "GRACE" in the New Testament can mean the following:

GRACE can mean: divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in life; benefit, favor, gift, and divine favor.

GRACE can mean: God’s goodness, love, mercy, and kindness toward people without regard to their work, deeds, and in spite of what they deserve.

GRACE can also mean: GRACEfulness, good suitableness, good, well, well-done, to be suitable or proper, graciousness, acceptable, joy, liberality, pleasure, thankworthy, happy or well-off, farewell, be glad, God speed, greeting, hail, joy, rejoice.

It also has other meanings in the English language that do not apply to the usage of the biblical word of "GRACE."

GRACE is an expression or demonstration of God’s love.

The most commonly used meaning for the word "GRACE" appears to be "unmerited favor."

GRACE, regarding salvation, conveys the meaning of the greatest free gift that can be given to someone totally separated from any effort or from anything one might do to deserve it.

GRACE may be said to be the greatest most wonderful gift, paid for with the greatest price in history, and given freely to those who do not deserve it.

GRACE may be said to be the culmination of all the past covenants. It does not destroy the Law, but fulfills it. It is the fulfillment of the Old Testament.

Salvation is given based on what Christ did at the cross. It is a free gift that cannot be earned through the works of the Law, through our own good works, or by any other method. It is a free gift that is given as a result of our faith and repentance towards God.

4-BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED THOUGH FAITH

It is written, Eph 2:8-FOR BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED (or delivered) THROUGH FAITH (or trusting); AND THAT NOT OF YOURSELVES (this is not your accomplishment-JNT): IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD:

Eph 2:9-NOT (as a result) OF WORKS (or your own actions), LEST ANY MAN (therefore) SHOULD BOAST.

Eph 2:10-FOR WE ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP (or making), CREATED IN (union with) CHRIST JESUS UNTO (or to do) GOOD WORKS (or actions), WHICH GOD HATH BEFORE (or in advance) ORDAINED (or prepared) THAT WE SHOULD WALK IN (or do) THEM.

Let us again look at Eph 2:8-10.

FOR BY GRACE, that is, by God’s loving kindness, goodness, mercy, and His undeserved divine favor,

ARE YE SAVED (or delivered). A person is delivered from the darkness to the light. He is saved from eternal death to eternal life. He is delivered from the shackles of the law of sin and death, to the freedom of the law of liberty and the eternal life. He is delivered from the power of the devil, to the GRACE of God. He is delivered from the second death. He is delivered from the old man and becomes a new man. The list could go on and on.

THROUGH FAITH. The faith that saves has to be centered in the person of Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, Who came in the flesh; Who is the middle Person of the Trinity. Jesus Christ is to be a person’s ONLY hope of salvation. As it is written, THERE IS NONE OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN GIVEN AMONG MEN, WHEREBY WE MUST BE SAVED-Acts 4:12.

AND THAT NOT OF YOURSELVES (this is not your accomplishment-JNT). There is absolutely nothing any person can do to earn his way into heaven. GRACE is totally dependent upon the work that Jesus Christ did at the cross. It is Jesus that gave His life, a ransom for many.

IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD. GRACE through faith is a gift given to us by God. It is the greatest gift there is.

NOT (as a result) OF WORKS (or your own actions). No works or actions that a person can do can earn them the gift of GRACE. There is an absolute requirement, however. That requirement is true faith which produces good fruit.

LEST ANY MAN (therefore) SHOULD BOAST. If a person could earn their way into heaven, then great boasting could take place. However, all are under sin. All have sinned. There is none righteous, no not one. Thus, it is by GRACE. It is a gift. Salvation is dependent upon the work that Jesus did. If a person is misled into thinking they can earn their way into heaven by being a good person; then the question is asked, "Why the cross?"

FOR WE ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP (or making). We are the workmanship of Jesus.

CREATED IN (union with) CHRIST JESUS UNTO (or to do) GOOD WORKS (or actions), WHICH GOD HATH BEFORE (or in advance) ORDAINED (or prepared) THAT WE SHOULD WALK IN (or do) THEM. We are created to do the will of God. We were created to do the works that God has ordained for us, before we were even born. God sets up circumstances and determines where we will live; all in accordance with His will. He then puts us in circumstances in which the works He has ordained for us to do become evident. We are to walk in the works God gives us to do.

The number one work all Christians should be involved in, is study, and study, and study the Word of God.

2 Tim 2:15-STUDY TO SHEW THYSELF APPROVED UNTO GOD, A WORKMAN THAT NEEDETH NOT TO BE ASHAMED, RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH. Mt 11:29-TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU, AND LEARN OF ME; FOR I AM MEEK AND LOWLY IN HEART: AND YE SHALL FIND REST UNTO YOUR SOULS.

5-A WORD STUDY ON GRACE

We are to minister the what?

Eph 3:2-DISPENSATION OF THE GRACE.

Acts 20:24-THE GOSPEL OF THE GRACE OF GOD.

Acts 20:32-THE WORD OF HIS GRACE.

You are called:

Gal 1:15- BY HIS GRACE.

We are saved by what? We are saved by:

Eph 2:8-BY GRACE.

Acts 14:3-THE WORD OF HIS GRACE.

Ro 3:24-GRACE THROUGH THE REDEMPTION THAT IS IN CHRIST JESUS.

Eph 1:7-REDEMPTION…ACCORDING TO…HIS GRACE.

Note:

Col 1:6-THE GRACE OF GOD IN TRUTH.

Rev 1:4-GRACE…FROM HIM WHICH IS, AND WHICH WAS, AND WHICH IS TO COME.

   Jesus is what? Jesus is:

Jn 1:14-FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH.

GRACE came by, is by, and is of who?

Ro 5:17-GRACE…BY…JESUS CHRIST.

Jn 1:17-GRACE AND TRUTH CAME BY JESUS CHRIST.

Acts 15:11-GRACE OF THE LORD JESUS.

Eph 2:7-GRACE…THROUGH CHRIST JESUS.

1 Tim 1:14-GRACE OF OUR LORD.

Gal 1:6-GRACE OF CHRIST.

Jude 4-GRACE OF OUR GOD.

1 Cor 1:3-GRACE…FROM GOD…AND…JESUS CHRIST.

2 Thes 1:12-GRACE OF OUR GOD AND THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Eph 1:6-HIS GRACE…HATH MADE US ACCEPTED.

Gal 1:15-GOD…BY HIS GRACE.

1 Pe 5:10-THE GOD OF ALL GRACE.

We can only come to God by Jesus Christ; by the GRACE He extends to us; by the GRACE which is in Him, by Him, through Him, of Him, and from Him.

   The Bible tells us that:

Heb 13:9-IT IS A GOOD THING THAT THE HEART BE ESTABLISHED WITH GRACE.

It is a good thing that the heart be established with what?

Col 3:16-GRACE IN YOUR HEARTS.

Ro 4:16-OF FAITH.

Eph 2:8-THROUGH FAITH.

Now please note the following very carefully:

Ro 1:5-RECEIVED GRACE…FOR OBEDIENCE TO THE FAITH.

A person receives GRACE for obedience to the faith; for obedience to Jesus Christ (the Word).

Then obedience is unto righteousness, as it is written:

Ro 6:16-OBEDIENCE UNTO RIGHTEOUSNESS.

And finally:

Ro 5:21-GRACE REIGN(s) THROUGH RIGHTEOUSNESS.

As already stated, we received GRACE for "obedience" to the faith, to Jesus, to the Word; for obedience unto righteousness, and GRACE reigns through righteousness.

If we turn from our righteousness, it means that we have stopped being obedient to the Gospel. The Scriptures tell us that GRACE reigns through righteousness. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

    We are told in:

1 Pe 1:13-HOPE…FOR THE GRACE.

2 Thes 2:16-HOPE THROUGH GRACE.

Eph 2:9-NOT OF WORKS.

1 Pe 5:12-THIS IS THE TRUE GRACE OF GOD WHEREIN YE STAND.

And in:

2 Cor 8:19-GRACE…ADMINISTERED BY US.

And in:

Eph 4:29-we MINISTER GRACE UNTO THE HEARERS.

We are warned regarding God’s precious GRACE, so that we do not do the following:

Gal 1:6-I MARVEL THAT YE ARE SO SOON REMOVED FROM HIM THAT CALLED YOU INTO THE GRACE OF CHRIST UNTO ANOTHER GOSPEL.

Gal 5:4-WHOSOEVER OF YOU ARE JUSTIFIED BY THE LAW; YE ARE FALLEN FROM GRACE.

Have you:

Heb 10:29-DONE DESPITE UNTO THE SPIRIT OF GRACE?

Gal 2:21-DO NOT FRUSTRATE THE GRACE OF GOD: FOR IF RIGHTEOUSNESS COME BY THE LAW, THEN CHRIST IS DEAD IN VAIN.
